This is one of the most visually disturbing books I've read. Anyone who is interested in the macabre, horror and noir is likely to enjoy this.

I think I'll go back and read the novel it was based upon and see how the manga compares. View all 4 comments. Feb 27, Makenzie rated it it was amazing Shelves: to-buy. I was unsure of this book when i first started reading it, but man it sure was twisted in the last chapter! Mar 20, Katerine Gail Pangilinan rated it it was amazing. This is one of the best suspense mystery light novels that I read.

Truly amazing. I applaud Otsuichi for making it seem like "A game between the author and the reader". The twists, up until the end, kept me at the edge of my seat as I was reading it. This is one of those mangas that works best with a heavy suspension of disbelief.

Plot points often lead to nowhere and there is a huge amount of convenient events throughout. Mar 07, Lydia Peever rated it it was amazing.

This is one of the best fiction stories i have read in a long time. Dec 07, Kai Van rated it it was amazing Shelves: read CW: gore, violence, death, suicide, some nudity, mutilation still love this. Seems people are using the wrong page for their reviews and as a result this listing has too high a score. I'll admit that I was pretty disappointed by this. The premise started fairly interestingly, but then we are presented with different vignettes featuring the same main characters and the initial chapter's premise is completely forgotten about. Each story features a different crime and criminal.

Each has some interesting elements Just to be clear, this is a review of the manga, not the novel. Each has some interesting elements, and furthers the actually pretty great characterization of the main character.

I say main character, singular, because I felt that the girl Yoru Morino was shallow by comparison despite getting the only backstory in the book. Instead, she is used over and over as the damsel in distress the writer even compared her to Princess Peach in the afterword.

The guy whose name I forget since it is only mentioned once or twice was one of the only good things about the book. I could actually feel his obsession with crimes and his willingness to commit them, and his sociopathic tendencies were depicted well. The problems with this book stem in part from the small amount of chapters they have to resolve the story as a whole, and the fact that the authors only have so many pages to elaborate on each vignette.

However, I do feel that there were ways to effectively create a cohesive story within that space, and that there were plenty of wasted pages. The major root of the problems in this manga is the over-reliance in contrivances to further the plot. First of which is the huge amount of criminals the MCs run into in such a short time.

Sure, they are looking for crime, but they are essentially crime magnets, especially Yoru who seems to always be the target, or presumed target.

Even in the afterword, the author admits that this is a nonsensical series and that he must be stupid. He also admits that it is strange that the characters keep getting involved with a murder case, but that unless he wrote it like that, there would be nothing to write about, which I find to be a pretty poor excuse. It is a severe lack of imagination on the writer's part, and it shows his inability as a writer to have to rely on such a contrivance. I don't know if the original novel suffers from the same problems, but this is a review of the manga anyway.

There are plenty of other contrivances in the plot, from small to huge leaps in disbelief. I would be more tolerant of this if the story was portrayed as surreal, or satirical, or silly; but the story is presented in a very serious manner, to the point where it could even be called edgy. There are some decent twists and concepts here and there, but they always fall flat due to the contrivances they rely upon and the lack of clarity in which they are presented.

As for the art, it ranges from great to mediocre. Some panels were phoned in, with a few even looking like preliminary sketches. The background art specifically looks pretty bad in general.

The depictions of the crime scenes tend to look pretty damn great though, with a couple of scenes actually being pretty elaborate. So it's a mixed bag, but I do like it as a whole. All in all, this was okay. I didn't hate it. It feels like the author only wanted to write about subtly eccentric characters with an obsession about murder, and wanted to implement some interesting concepts he had for said murderers' modi operandi.

In that, I think he succeeds. That is the appeal of this book, at least to someone like me who does like sociopathic characters and creative criminals in my stories. Overall positive experience, but I would not ever call this a good manga.

I can't lie, the cover art really drew me in, and the description on the back of the book sealed the deal; Morino is the strangest girl in school—how could she not be, given her obsession with brutal murders?

And there are plenty of murders to grow obsessed with, as the town in which she lives is a magnet for serial killers. She and her schoolmate will go to any length to investigate the mu Though Otsuichi's work in horror is heralded, I'd yet to read anything of his before I picked this book up.

She and her schoolmate will go to any length to investigate the murders, even putting their own bodies on the line. This was a fresh concept that I could get behind. I began reading it, and it proved hard to put down. Morino and "her friend" seem to have chance encounter after chance encounter with serial killers. Their hometown is a breeding ground for them, apparently, as they're dealing with a new one every chapter.

The idea behind that many serial killers in one town is hardly believable Otsuichi says so himself in the afterword , but it makes for fun reading. There's no coherent story line taking place aside from the growth of the characters. Every chapter is literally them dealing with a different serial killer, with occurrences from the former stories only getting a passing mention, if even that.

That being said, everything about this book is done right. The characters are so frighteningly detailed that I feel like I know Morino and "her friend" firsthand. The plot twists there are quite a few are well thought out beforehand, not thrown in in a haphazard attempt to keep the readers interested. The serial killers' minds are described at length with descriptions I can only assume are accurate.

Regardless, there's not a character in the book that's cardboard. There's no stiff dialogue, no cliched story arcs, nothing that remotely makes this a bad book. If you're big on plot, then don't bother with this book.

There isn't a plot outside of the short stories that double as chapters. If you like good writing, a fresh concept, and stories that'll send a chill down your spine seriously, there's some freaky stuff in here , then Goth is for you. Jan 13, Nura rated it really liked it Shelves: graphic. Question for this chapter: where the boy took the hands to? But I think the mangaka draw it too clean, if you look the eyes closely, or there any reason behind it?

I'm getting annoyed with the boy who think to highly of himself. Could he didn't see the reason she wore the victim's clothes? Hmm, maybe its just me and my imagination. There's something make me itchy about this chapter: the boy said he took the knives set and the crosses drawing from the murderer's room, but he actually going down stair empty-handed.

Aug 18, Hazel rated it it was ok. This is not a gothic story about goths, just the author trying to extend the definition to include murderers and torturers which is hugely offensive to anyone gothically inclined. Yes, you can have gothic psychopaths but not all psychopaths are goths. At the end of the book the author writes "goth is a 'culture a fashion and a style' What has that got to do with teenagers who romanticise murderers, multilators and torturers?

Teenagers who don't seem remotely interested in gothic culture, fashion or style the girl has black hair, but that's pushing it. One of them wants to chop off hands, and the other has started her sociopathic journey during childhood. On top of that the story is silly, they interact with murderers without ever getting hurt, the murderers walk off into the sunset and no police appear. The girl is portrayed as being stupid, and has to be constantly rescued by the male characters, something particularly irksome as a female reader.

I gave this 2 stars because the art is very good, but not outstanding, there are much better Horror manga out there. Oct 02, Sharakael rated it it was amazing Shelves: proper-murder-mystery , thriller , manga. When I first read a scanlation of this manga, it left a lasting impression in my memory. So much that, when it had been released in English, I rushed to the bookshop to buy it. For me, it was an interesting twist on the usual mystery genre where this time the main character wasn't what you'd call a good guy.

A sociopath would be more apt. His apathy, coupled with the gruesome nature of the crime, set a chilling tone for the whole book. And that was what I found to be highly fascinating; the thin When I first read a scanlation of this manga, it left a lasting impression in my memory. And that was what I found to be highly fascinating; the thin line between the protagonist and the criminals was that he simply didn't go through with his criminal urges.

The art was very appropriate, stark black and white with sharp lines and a lack of grey shading. The chapter heading art was one of the first thing that drew me into the book; it was morbid and beautiful in its execution, which I found to be really fascinating. The mystery was better executed in the novel format than in manga format, but that doesn't mean the manga isn't worth reading.

Highly recommended if you like mysteries and can stand the more depraved facets of human nature. There are no discussion topics on this book yet. Be the first to start one ». Readers also enjoyed. Comics Manga. About Otsuichi. He is a Japanese writer, mostly of horror short stories. The stories are interesting and well-crafted, centered around but not exclusive to two main characters who are neither likable or empathetic, but keep you engaged from start to finish. My only real complaint about this book, aside from the obvious gore with still has me twitching in recollection , is the title itself.

Having grown up with the "Goth" movement, having friends involved in the subculture, I was disappointed at how little the book actually had to do with Goths themselves.

One character dresses primarily in black, and there's talk of death Love it or hate it, the Goth movement is so much more than that. The title is more of a selling point, a way for the author to reel in his audience with something flashy and familiar, a fact he readily admits and apologizes for in the author notes.

If you're looking for a deeper exploration of the topic you're in for a rude and rather grotesque awakening. However, if you want to read a well-crafted collection of gut-churning horror stories, I'd recommend this book. Online stores:. Copy in the library:. Reviews see all davi. Other books by Horror.
